Biographical/Historical Note
Francis de Erdely (1904-1959) was a Hungrarian American painter, printmaker and professor who worked in Los Angeles, California. Born in Hungary, de Erdley grew up during the first World War which influenced his early artwork, often depicting the horrors of war in his paintings and sketches. De Erdely first studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Budapest (19191924) before traveling to Europe to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in San Feranado in Madrid and the Sorbonne in Paris, and in the Louvre. In 1939 de Erdely immigrated to the United States, settling in Los Angeles in 1940. He was dean of the Pasadena Art Museum School from 1944 through 1946, and joined the faculty of the University of Southern California as Professor of Fine Arts in 1945, where he taught until his death.
Provenance
Donated 1989 by Patricia Weaver, who inherited the papers from Louise Hartman Ronay, the mother of de Erdeley's widow, Edith. The English translation of the typescript autobiography was donated by the Huntington Library.
