Herman Maril papers, 1932-2023, bulk 1935-1986

This series includes a range of biographical material such as resumes and short biographical statements or profiles, World War II military service records, awards and certificates, and limited financial records. A folder of documents on Herman Maril's personal collection of African sculpture includes an appraisal, correspondence, writings, slides and photographs. In addition, there are a few sketches and holiday greeting card designs by Herman Maril and two interviews with Herman Maril: one is an interview transcript and the other is a sound recording.

This series consists of a mixture of personal and professional correspondence with friends, colleagues, artists, universities, galleries, and arts organizations. Much of the correspondence is addressed to Herman Maril and his wife Esta. Some of the folders include clippings and printed materials about individual correspondents. Mary Ainsworth, Julian Anthony, William Bronk, Martha and Sheldon Cheney, Sidney Cox, and Olin Dows are among the most voluminous correspondents.

The materials in this series have been arranged in alphabetical order. Correspondents with less than three letters have been placed in the "miscellaneous" alphabetical files. Unidentifed and "first names only" correspondents are at the end of the series.

Most of this series consists of writings by Herman Maril, though there are some writings by others as well. Maril's writings include one journal and numerous handwritten and typescript drafts of artist statements, short stories, essays, and lectures. Most of the short stories seem to be inspired by Maril's World War II military service experiences, whereas the essays and lectures touch upon autobiographical subjects to thoughts on life in Baltimore, but mostly focus on art. Writings by others include essays on Herman Maril and a few essays on art that do not mention Maril.

The journal is at the beginning of the series and the rest of the writings by Maril are arranged in alphabetical order by title. The writings by others are grouped together towards the end of the series.

This series includes a mixture of teaching files from schools and universities where Herman Maril taught art and projects files mostly related to the Federal Art Project sponsored by the Works Progress Administration. Most of the teaching files are from the Cummington School, King-Smith School, and the University of Maryland where Maril taught for a little over three decades. The teaching files include by correspondence regarding job appointments and promotions, applications for grants and sabbaticals, course catalogs, and other material. The Federal Art Project materials include correspondence and photographs related to murals that Maril created for a post office in Alta Vista, Virginia, and a post office in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The gallery files document Herman Maril's relationships with various galleries that represented him or exhibited his artwork over the years through correspondence, exhibition catalogs and announcements, price lists, inventory lists, and sales records. The files on Baltimore Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Forum Gallery, and Franz Bader Gallery are especially noteworthy.

Organization files consist of material related to places such as the Artists Equity Association of which Herman Maril was a member. Constitution and by-laws, meeting minutes, newsletters, bulletins, and brochures are some of the materials that can be found in the organization files.

Printed materials include books, exhibition catalogs and announcements, magazine articles, and newsclippings. The bulk of the material in this series references or is about Herman Maril and his artwork, especially group and solo shows he participated in. In addition, there is a documentary on Maril and video recordings of various people, such as a curator and museum director, talking about Maril. While most of this series is about Maril, there is a small amount of clippings on other artists and subjects.

Most of the materials in this series are grouped in alphabetical order by type, such as books, exhibition catalogs, and news clippings. Printed materials about Herman Maril make up the bulk of the series and materials on other artists and subjects are grouped together towards the end of the series, followed by the video recordings on Maril.

The bulk of the materials in this series have been digitized. Duplicates have not been digitized. In some cases, exhibition catalogs and other publications have had their covers, title pages, and relevant pages scanned. Only a sampling of the newspaper clippings from some years have been digitized due to the volume of the clippings and out of conservation concerns.

This series consists of black and white photographs of various Herman Maril paintings. Some of the photographs have information on the versos describing the dimensions, material, and date of the painting, as well as occasional exhibition dates or the name of a museum or collection. There is one transparency and a few slides of paintings, but the rest of the series are photographic prints.
