Taped to back of photo is a typewritten label which gives a brief bio of Maurer: Son of the painter Louis Maurer, Alfred broke away from the academicism of his father's generation and joined other young Americans in learning lessons in Paris from Les Fauves. An unhappy man all his life, he committed suicide at age 64.
