Item Information
Title: Jack Kerouac
Date: 1963
Physical Details: 1 photographic print : b&w ; 25 x 20 cm.
Description: Identification on verso (handwritten): Jack Micheline introduced Mitchell to his good friend Franz Kline and when he died the N.Y. Times ran Mitchell's classic photo with the obituary.
Mitchell knew Kerouac in New York but never photographed him because Jack was always drunk, stumbling around, friends saying we have to take care of Poor Old Jack.
Jim caught him in San Francisco with poet Phillip Whalen and poet-artist Bill Morris. They started out sober, wound up drunk. Jim has 100 unprinted photos of then, one I bought from contact sheet which he has not printed. Kerouac has a 1/2 gallon jug of wine in one hand and a note pad of his writings in the other.
