Description: Identification on verso (handwritten): 9 July 1945; salt mine, Altaussee, Austria; packing the Michelangelo "Madonna & Child" in the Kaiser Joseph mine; left to right, 1st Lt. Stephen Kovalyak, Lt. Cmdr. George Stout USNR, Lt. Cmdr. T.C. Howe Jr. USNR; This world famous statue, carried off from Belgium by the Germans, was found at the Alt Aussee salt mine, packed & shipped by MFA&A offices to the Munich Collecting Point pending its return to the church in Bruges (to which it belongs).
Photo shows Kovalyak, Stout and Howe examining the sculpture which is tied up with ropes and resting on a dolly.
