Biographical/Historical Note
The Smith Andersen Gallery was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 1969 by Paula and Phillip Kirkeby. The gallery represented contemporary artists working in a range of mediums, including fabric, paint, print, and sculpture; and had studio space inside for invited artists to use. In 1978, Paula Kirkeby, along with Joseph Goldyne and Mary Margaret Anderson, founded the fine arts print publishing company 3EP, LTD., in Palo Alto. In 1984, Paula Kirkeby took over the 3EP operations and renamed it Smith Andersen Editions. The Smith Andersen Gallery closed in 2016 upon Paula Kirkeby's death.
Provenance
The collection was donated in several installments from 1977 to 1981 by Paula Z. Kirkeby, director of Smith Andersen Gallery.
