Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Monday, December 1, 1873, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Monday, Dec 1, 1873- It snowed today and has been very cold. Julia Vaux attempted to go home but the ferry boat was delayed by the ice and Julia had to return. I took a walk in the afternoon out by Fox Hall and home by the Alms House. Pepper went with me and got run over by a sleigh frightening him terribly but not seriously injuring him. Painted most of the day on my little Late Autumn. Received a letter from Fitch. A terrible disaster at sea. The Ville de Havre run down and sunk with a loss of two hundred lives, among them Judge Peckham known hereabouts.
