Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Monday, July 20, 1874, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Monday, July 20, 1874- Julia Dillon came to help us with the lounge. I went to the Strand to deposite my Booth check in the bank and when I got back very warm found Mrs Wood (Miss Penfield) here, come to give me a sitting. I got ready and commenced a picture of her but it was twelve oclock before I got to work, we had to stop for dinner and she was obliged to be in Kingston a little after four, consequently I worked very nervously. A thunder storm came up and it grew dark and I had to take her home in the wagon. It poured before we reached there. She did not get wet but I did. I would like to paint her deliberately as she has pure eyes and beautiful color with a sweet expression.
