Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Wednesday, December 8, 1875, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Rained all day. Called at the Wilsons to talk about the picture. Found out that Tom Smiths weak and bogus sentimentality touches them as deeply as I can. These people are a study to me. The house rich and elegant but looking as though if any thing were moved an inch out of its proper place they would be unhappy. The servant girl asked me to wipe my feet when I entered. I am to paint them a picture. I shall try to paint a good one and if they dont want it some one else will. Shall paint a small one first and let them see it. Wrote to Gertrude from whom I received a letter today. Gifford dined with me. He is not well and says he cant paint.
