Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Sunday, June 20, 1875, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Spent yesterday in trimming my hedge. I cut down about two feet the piece from the gate near the house towards the woods and found it a laborious work. In the evening Gertrude, Sara and I attended a meeting of the Library Club at Dr. Frisselles. Mr. Demanst read the essay on the "Spirit of the Age" talking the ground that the distinguishing spirit of the age was its mechanical one. It was well written and caused no little discussion in which nearly all took part. Today I had a dull head ache in the forenoon but it disappeared after dinner. I wrote to Girard from whom I had a letter yesterday. He told me that Mr. Hoe had spoken in the most enthusiastic terms of my Academy picture and said it was the best picture of its kind he had seen since he left America two years ago and wants to exchange the last picture I painted for him for one like it. I also received a check for $50 from Moore who still owes me $65 which it seems like pulling teeth to get. Spent a couple of hours over at John McEntees and Gertrude and I went to church with my mother, the first time I have been in the Presbyterian church. Mr. Blauvelt came up while I was trimming my hedge yesterday and I had quite a conversation with him. He was at the Literary Club last night. I was agreeably surprised to find so many bright men there. Certainly Kingston is improving.
