Jervis McEntee Diaries

Monday March 1, 1875

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Monday, March 1, 1875, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

I went home on Saturday. It snowed furiously when I left but the storm cleared off when the train got to Tarrytown. At Rhinebeck where the train was half an hour late Maurice met me. A freight train moved down and cut us off for 20 minutes longer. It was very cold riding on the river but the glowing wood fire at home soon thawed us out. It had snowed there nearly all day. It was so pleasant at home. The baby bashfully awaited the opening of my valise and went off in triumph with the whip and bells I took him. Mary was there enjoying her winter visit. Sunday was bright and cold and we had a sweet home day enough to bless the whole week. This morning it was snowing again. Maurice drove me over to the 9.44 train and at 1 I was in my studio. Lilly and Uncle Charles came down. Eastman came in and spent an hour with me while the snow came down outside like mid winter. Fitch, Hall and I dined with Gifford in his room when I had to hurry off to the Academy to the meeting of the Fellows. By this time it was raining and it was one of New Yorks worst nights. Of course the Fellows didnt come, with the exception of Sherwood, John A Weeks, Cyrus and Richard Butler and Pinchot. We had an informal talk and appointed a committee of fifty Fellows who are to be called together again. I did not get home until midnight.
