Joe Tomkins came today and brought the burned picture with him. To my delight it is not so utterly destroyed as I feared. I took it up to Colmering who removed much of the smoke and I can now repair damages. Joe and I called on Bayard Taylor and at Eastman Johnsons to see Joe [?] who has just returned from Europe. Today Platt came in in the afternoon and he and I took a walk up town and watched the trains from the bridge at the Grand Central Depot. Vaux dined with me and in the evening we went to a Reception at the Art Museum. Dr. Bellows made a speech in which he referred to me and others as better able to talk in such matters than a mere layman like himself but he little knows how poorly we talk about what we do.
