Left by the day boat on my way to the White Sulphur Springs. Met Gertrude who came on from Boston on the morning of the 6th. Staid in N.Y. over night and took steamer to Richmond 7th at 3 p.m. Arrived at Richmond after a pleasant passage on Monday morning 9th and took Chesapeake and Ohio R.R. via Gordonsville, Charlottesville & Staunton to White Sulphur Springs where we arrived at 8 in the evening 220 miles. The Taylors met us at the station. They occupy a cottage but we had a room in the hotel. An immense hotel surrounded by a great number of cottages. Rude accommodations but a pleasant place. Were there two weeks. Not many there at first but about 600 when we left. Plenty of Confederate Officers. Genl Jubal Early with whom I had a little conversation. Genl. Joe Johnston. Genl McCausland. Reagan of Texas. Ben Hill. Ex gov Wells of Va. Mr. Corcoran of Washington. The Peruvan Minister & family. Major Wickham & family of N.Y. who were fellow passengers with us on the steamer. Taylor and I made an excursion to Kanawha Falls while there. We left 23rd for Goshen and made a trip to the Natural Bridge through Lexington. Staid there over one day and made a sketch of it. Found it very interesting and impressive. Got back to Goshen and took sleeping car to Richmond Thursday night. In Richmond called on David Anderson whom I have not seen for 30 years. Very hot. Suffered much from heat ever since we left White Sulphur. Too hot to go about Richmond. Took steamer at 3 and for the first time in a week got cool. Passed the historic battlefields by day light and through Dutch Gap. Were in Norfolk all day Saturday taking on freight. Comfortable in the morning but very hot in the afternoon. Terrific Thunder Storms as we left at 7 and grand effects of skies. Arrived in N.Y. Monday Morning about 1 o'clock. Staid on board until 6 and took carriage to studio where we bathed and had breakfast. Went out and attended to some business, had dinner and went to bed early and on Tuesday took day boat for home where we arrived about 3 very glad to be back. The Centennial celebration of the inauguration of Gov Geo. Clinton occurred at Kingston on Monday (yesterday) 30. We just missed it by a day. It was a great success.
