Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Sunday, March 11, 1877, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
We went to Mrs. John Bigelows in 30th St to hear John Weiss read an essay on "Comedy in Nature" in which he showed the important part in our lives which the humorous element plays. He made a most powerful and convincing appeal for the theatre and in spite of many eccentricities of expression and manner I enjoyed it very much. About twenty or thirty people were present among them Dorman, B. Eaton & his wife, Mr. Morse, Mrs. Dodge & her sister Mrs. Tolles. Miss Cortes, Mr & Mrs Swayne Gifford, Mrs. Frothingham and others.
