Pinchot came in and sat an hour or more. I was struck with the fact that although he is a rich man he worries about expenses perhaps more than I do. The Council meeting this evening was quite uninteresting except that they admit every one who applies to the schools now that the pupils pay. I sit and silently protest against the whole vicious system. There was an article in the Tribune today on the Academy Schools evidently dictated by Page. Pinchot who was instrumental in getting up the Loan Exhibition told me yesterday that he thought it never would have been undertaken had it been known the free schools were to have been abolished.
