Jervis McEntee Diaries

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Tuesday, March 6, 1877, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Received a letter from Lucy. Attended Taylors lecture on the German literature of the period of the Reformation. His idea is that Luther crystallized by his writings and his sympathy with the expression of the people the golden period of the literature of the last century. As usual Albert Crane turned up there and met wherever I spoke with any one. These ambitious nobodies annoy me more than I should permit. Received a letter from Selstedt telling me that the Buffalo Art Association had concluded to offer me one thousand dollars for my "Sea from Shore" now on exhibition there and hoping I would accept. I had determined to take that amount if they offered it and I wrote him that I accepted.
