Jervis McEntee Diaries

Friday September 21, 1877

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Friday, September 21, 1877, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Went out to Shandaken by the afternoon train on Wednesday and staid over night and Laments. Thursday walked about nearly all day trying to find some thing to paint as I wanted to go out there in October but I confess I found nothing. There are no fine trees or attractive detail of any sort. The country simply looked bare and bald and uninteresting and I came back yesterday discouraged. Today I have been trying to paint a composition but I feel worried and troubled, chiefly that I cannot decide where to go to get some autumn studies.
