Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Thursday, May 30, 1878, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Went to New Haven yesterday on Weirs invitation. In the train found Calvert, Guy, J. G. Brown, Van Elten, Henry, Waller and Peabody. Carriages met us at the depot and took us to the Art school. Visited the school and the galleries and spent a delightful hour with Prof. Marsh in the Peabody museum. Returned to the Art school and sat down to a nice dinner with the President and several of the professors. There were some speeches and after dinner we took a ride. Returning stopped at Weirs house and had supper and spent a couple of hours with the ladies, Mrs. Weir and Lily and Mrs. French. Weir has a charming old fashioned house very prettily furnished. We came home by 8 oclock train. They pressed me to stay over night and were disappointed that I could not but I had an engagement with Booth at 9 1/2 oclock today. He did not come however but sent me word his wife was ill. This is Decoration day. I saw some of the war regiments in 5th av this morning with their tattered flags. Great preparations had been made and much interest manifested but it has been a rainy day, a part of the time raining hard. Wrote to Gertrude and to Weir.
