Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, May 19, 1884, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Monday, May 19, 1884 Joe and Gertrude left for Hillsboro today. I drove them down to the 7.25 ferry boat. Their going home without dear Gussie will be very sad. Mary and Marion went by the 11.45 West Shore train. I drove them up and my father went along. Have been at work getting the paper off the sitting room preparatory to having it papered and painted. A letter from Eastman Johnson and a note from Miss. Nesmith. Sara had a letter from Miss Odell hinting at some great trouble in their family. They have to give up their house and she did not say why. Sara also received a despairing letter from Laura.
