This series is Colin de Land's photographic archive, most of which are snapshots. Some photographs are digital. De Land is frequently cited as never having been without a camera. He invited anyone visiting the gallery or working with him to document daily comings and goings. The resulting images are a candid representation of the gallery's activities, as well as de Land and his circle's personal lives. Documentation of AFA exhibitions is limited. Descriptions of the contents of each folder are meant to highlight notable names and events and do not provide a comprehensive description of every photograph - most of which were unidentified except for notations on the envelopes.

This series is arranged into 3 subseries:

1.1

Snapshots, 1968-2003, bulk 1980-2003

Although there are some early snapshots depicting Vox Populi and the 1980s New York City art scene, the majority of the snapshots document American Fine Arts, Co. in the 1990s. They candidly depict daily life in and around the gallery, opening receptions, and social gatherings. There are images of AFA staff, artists, and visitors, as well as figures from the larger art world, however most are not identified except for notations on the envelopes. There are also snapshots of the the Gramercy International Contemporary Art Fair and its successor, The Armory Show, vacations in Cape Cod, and trips to international art fairs and festivals such as Documenta, the Venice Biennale, and Art Cologne. De Land was interested in the confluence of art and commerce; many photographs include advertisements, television screens, and other signifiers of consumer culture. Some groups of photographs are identified as belonging to Pat Hearn.

Other Formats, circa 1977-2003

Found here are a range of photographic material including framed personal photographs, binders and portfolios of photographic prints, contact sheets, and negatives, and digital photographs transferred from a laptop. The binders have been disassembled and their original order retained. These sometimes include more formal installation shots of gallery exhibitions, though the documentation is not exhaustive.

Slides, circa 1980s-2003

Slides document daily life within the American Fine Arts, Co. circle. Many are related to vacations in Cape Cod and art related travel in Germany, including trips to Documenta and the Koln Kunstmarkt. Subject matter may overlap with the photographs found in Series 1.1: Snapshots. Slides are arranged in rough chronological order.

There are two scrapbooks containing photographs, news clippings, posters, and various pieces of ephemera. Most of the items included in the scrapbooks can be seen hanging on the wall in photographs showing de Land's desk and the back office space of American Fine Arts. It is likely that these were assembled after de Land's death. The scrapbooks have been maintained in their original condition.

Series 3: Video and Film Recordings, circa 1980-2003

Audiovisual material is found in two formats: DV mini-cassettes and Super 8 film. Also found is one mini-cassette recording. The majority of the 35 Super 8 films were recorded in Cape Cod, though some were recorded in other locations, namely at American Fine Arts in New York City. Several document the final stages of Pat Hearn's illness. All but two are silent.

The videos on the 31 DV mini-cassettes were taken by Colin de Land, primarily in and around the year 2000, using video settings on a digital photographic camera. The content overlaps with the snapshots from this era, many of which are stills from these videos. There is extensive video documenting the end of Pat Hearn's illness, some coverage of exhibition openings, travels to various locations, and a lecture given by Colin de Land.

Researchers should note that some of the recordings in this collection contain segements of porongraphic and otherwise sexually explicit content. The recordings documenting the final stages of Pat Hearn's illness also tend to be fairly graphic and may be disturbing to some viewers.

All audiovisual material in this series has been digitized for research access.

Included here are objects belonging to Colin de Land and Pat Hearn. There is one small painted and matted print by artist Charles Clough, inscribed to Hearn. Also included is a baseball hat frequently worn by de Land and appearing in many of the snapshots and a one page of a calendar signed by model Claudia Schiffer, likely obtained at an autograph event in November 1995. Additionally, there is a copy of the book, Colin de Land: American Fine Arts, edited by Dennis Balk.
