Edmund C. Tarbell papers, circa 1845-circa 2000, bulk 1885-1938

This subseries consists of Edmund Charles Tarbell's correspondence with friends, family, artists, museums, universities and arts organizations. Notable correspondence includes letters from Tarbell to his brother-in-law, Augustus "Gus" Nickerson, and sister, Nellie Sophia, which were written from Venice, London, and Paris, mainly on the subject of his acceptance to the Paris Salon in 1886 and his studies at the Académie Julian and with William T. Dannat. Other significant correspondents include Frank W. Benson, William Merritt Chase, Frank Duveneck, Henry Clay Frick, Philip Leslie and Lilian Westcott Hale, August F. Jaccaci, Charles Kurtz, Lilla Cabot Perry, and J. Alden Weir.

The bulk of Emeline Tarbell's correspondence consists of letters Edmund Charles Tarbell wrote to her while he was a student at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1884-1886. There are also letters from her brothers Frank and Richard Souther, other siblings and her mother Mercie Souther.

Josephine Tarbell Ferrell's correspondence mostly relates to her efforts in the 1930s to preserve the Tarbell home in New Castle, New Hampshire as a memorial to her father. These include letters from the artist Frank W. Benson, a good friend of Edmund Tarbell and member of the Ten American Painters group, and a letter from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. In addition, there are letters about exhibitions of her father's work, especially at the Pierce Galleries, but also with various museums.
