Scope and Contents
The papers of Francis de Erdely measure 3.4 linear feet and date from 1925-1968. The papers document de Erdely's career through biographical material, writings, photographic material and scrapbooks. Biographical material contains medals and ribbons De Erderly won throughout his career, including a judge's pin for the California State Fair. Also found is an address book that shows de Erdely's various artistic connections and friendships. The writing series contains an autobiographical manuscript in Hungarian, as well as an English typescript translation, which covers de Erdely's early years (ages 15 to 19) as an art student in Budapest at the National Academy of Arts from 1919 to 1924. Scrapbooks make up a majority of the collection and document de Erdely's life spanning from 1925 to 1968 through newspaper clippings and art jury news, exhibition reviews, photographs and correspondence with museums.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated 1989 by Patricia Weaver, who inherited the papers from Louise Hartman Ronay, the mother of de Erdeley's widow, Edith. The English translation of the typescript autobiography was donated by the Huntington Library.
