Toshiko Takaezu papers, circa 1925-circa 2010

This series consists of personal and professional correspondence with friends, family, and other artists. Many folders include letter drafts written by Toshiko Takaezu to various correspondents.

Noteworthy correspondents include Dan Anderson, Stephen Berg, Olen Bryant, Maryette Charlton, Maija Grotell, Ivabell Harlan, Joseph Hurley, Nobuko Ise, Ernestine Kozuma, Isamu Noguchi, Hideo Okino, Alice Parrott, Carol and Francois Rigolot, Ann Shaner, Brooke Shields, Gladys Sonomura, Barbara Tiso, Carol and Katsunari Toyoda, Frans Wildenhain, and Lois Wittich. There is also a great deal of correspondence with Toshiko Takaezu's mother and siblings.

Also included herein are letters of recommendations for students, greeting cards, loose envelopes, and three folders of correspondence related to exhibitions Toshiko Takaezu participated in dating from 1958-1963.

The bulk of this series is arranged in alphabetical order. Correspondents that have more than 3 letters often have their own folder. Correspondents with less than 4 letters are often in the "Miscellaneous" alphabetical folders. Undated letters and Toshiko Takaezu's undated drafts of letters are placed at the beginning of each folder.

Batches of correspondence that could not be merged with the alphabetical files can be found towards the end of the series. These include letters from unidentified correspondents, letters of recommendation for students, exhibition-related correspondence, and greeting cards. These folder groupings are mostly arranged in chronological order. The "exhibitions-related correspondence" folders include chronological exhibition lists and reflects the original order of the letters upon receipt at the archives.

The bulk of the material in this series has been digitized. Recommendation letters for students and most of the greeting cards have not been digitized. The typescript draft of Stephen Berg's poetry book has only had its cover and copyright page digitized.
